Dog Grooming

I’m a pet groomer in a small town in Colorado. I just moved here not to long ago and right now I’m working out of a store, that before me was just a self service wash and pet supplies. I pay her 40%,of what whatever i make with my grooming, for using her tubs, shampoos, and dryers. I can groom before, after and during store hours. people call me for appointments and we both keep track of what i make and what I’ve payed her. She has changed all her adds to say that she now offers full-service grooming.

But i have just got an offer to be the groomer in a new kennel and training place. the lady who is starting it is an amazing trainer who has some existing ideas. She loves me and the way i handle the animals and care for them and she told me that she would have a room in her building just for me. with all the tables and tubs and dryers that i want! and she will let me study under her as a trainer and that some day she will get me certified as a dog trainer. i love animals and this is a dream for me.

but the lady I’m grooming for right now is nice and we’ve become friends and i feel bad that she is changing her adds. but her adds do not say my name on them. we do not have a contract or anything. and she has kinda been pushy when it comes to my scheduling and pricing. she wants me to charge more and over book myself. she doesn’t come right out and say that but that’s how it makes me feel.
what should i do?? and if i do switch places how do i tell the lady I’m working with right now?? any advice would help thank you.

Yes switch. Just tell the lady your sorry but a better opportunity has come along and you just can’t let it go by. Hopefully she will understand, if not…her loss.

It is just as if you are moving forward in your career. You just have to sit down and tell her about your new offer and possibly some of your reasons for wanting to leave. Be mature about it and do your 2 weeks notice of work with her at her business and let the new women know that you had to do 2 more weeks with your old location. You could even offer to interview dog groomers in the area during your final two weeks. As for the ad’s she has made if they do not showcase your name then a replacement groomer should workout just fine.

Although a word to the wise be sure that this other women no matter how nice is sincere about her offers. Get them in writing before you bring it up to your current store owner.

I see your dilemma. But business is business. She does not need to change all of her ads if you give her notice, she just needs to find another groomer to come in. Career decisions are exactly that, decisions to advance your career. I would actually consider doing both for a while myself. This would give your old boss time to find a replacement and also let you see if the new place will actually build a clientele base. It is a bad time for new businesses. The new place may struggle for clients.

Maybe you could try out working for the new lady on a trial basis while still working for the original place. That way you could see how things would work out for you and how you like working with/for her. You may decide that things are good where you are and that you’d rather talk to your original person about the pressures to over-book and charge too much. She may be very reasonable if you approach her from a business side of things and tell her in a nice way. But if you’re sure you want to change and that learning to be a trainer is your dream then I say go for it. You don’t want to end up regretting not taking a great opportunity like that because they don’t come along often. If you’re nice about how you tell the lady you’re with now and give her at least a two week notice, surely she’ll be understanding. Good Luck! :)
